Craft cider and soft drinks producer Cornish Orchards sponsored the hugely successful Great Sausage Roll Off 2015, where our founder and development chef James Strawbridge was fortunate enough to scoop the prestigious third prize. James’ entry was an attempt to represent the best Cornwall has to offer making a special sausage roll based on our Posh Pasty Co version but with some extra flavours. James called his entry The Duke – after the Duke of Cornwall. The ingredients included Duchy Game Venison, Primrose Herd outdoor reared Pork, Cornish Orchards Wassail Mulled Cider, some apple-smoked Cornish Blue Cheese, Junipers and Cranberries. Then he also made a rosemary pastry using smoked Trewithen Dairy butter – plus a few other secret weapons again using local treats. The event was fantastic fun and we’d strongly encourage any Cornish chefs or keen bakers to enter next year – we could even car share…

The panel of X Factor style judges included Great British Bake Off 2010 winner, Edd Kimber, TV Presenter and Pie man Andy Bates and Celebrity Mastermind 2014 runner-up, Charley Boorman. Hosted at Fuller’s Red Lion pub in Barnes, the competition aims to find chefs from around the country who add care, quality, expertise and that little extra ‘je ne sais quois’ to the humble, but most British, of bar snacks. Taking first place in the contest was John Grabecki, who

beat 18 other chefs with his rabbit, black pudding and ham sausage roll. Victorious John is now looking forward to visiting Cornish Orchards, where he will enjoy a tour of Westnorth Manor Farm with Head Cider Maker Chris Newton, as part of his prize in The Great Sausage Roll Off.

Angus McKean, who organises the annual event says this year was bigger and better than ever: “It is great to see the Great Sausage Roll Off getting bigger and bigger each year and its success is a testament to the calibre of the chefs we have participating in the competition. 2015 saw some inspired ideas and extraordinary talent. I really can’t wait for next year !” Neither can we – next year we hope to bring the Great British Sausage Roll title home to Cornwall with a little help from our quality local suppliers and friends… (416)Venison Sausage Roll by Posh Pasty Co photography by David Griffen
